Study Details

The HOPE COVID-19 study is investigating whether the virus that causes COVID-19 and factors associated with the pandemic, like stress and social distancing, might affect a woman's or birthing person's risk for adverse pregnancy outcomes. We are also looking at how the virus and pandemic might affect newborn and infant health.

Learning more about how the pandemic is affecting low-income and Black and Brown women and birthing persons who are already at increased risk for adverse pregnancy and infant outcomes is of special importance to the research team. The team is looking at how perceived discrimination and systematic racism may be impacting infection with the COVID-19 related virus and associated stress and outcome patterns.

To participate in the study a person must be pregnant, 18 years of age or older, and feel comfortable downloading and using mobile phone applications. At this time participants must also feel comfortable reading and writing in English to participate. We hope to expand to Spanish in early 2021. Participation in the survey+testing cohort includes additional requirements noted below.

HOPE COVID-19 study includes two study cohorts:

  • The survey only cohort includes pregnant women and birthing persons who participate by filling out surveys during pregnancy until their baby is 18 months old. Participation in this cohort is open to pregnant women and birthing persons who live in the United States and in other countries. We are currently enrolling into this cohort.
  • The survey+testing cohort includes pregnant women and birthing persons who participate by filling out surveys and having laboratory testing done duriing pregnancy until their baby is 18 months old. Participants in this study cohort have nasal secretions and blood collected at certain study time points along with breastmilk postnatally and a baby heel stick blood sample if they choose. Specimen collection is done by having laboratory personnel visit their homes for collection or by a participant visiting a laboratory specimen collection site. Some participants in this study cohort also participate in phone interviews. Women and birthing persons must live in specific geographies to participate in this cohort. We anticipate that this will start with enrollment of people in the San Francisco Bay Area in late summer 2020. We are not currently enrolling into this cohort.
